I noticed that Mushroom had been biting his tail and making in bleed. He had little bite marks all over it. Of course, I did some research and learned that it could be mites. So, the next thing I researched was whether rats can have a Selamectin treatment and how much to give.
This is the video I watched.
I learned that one drop is enough for each rat, and dose them again in two weeks.
Make sure you hold the rat for 30 seconds to let it soak in.
So, on the 15th July, I gave Mushroom and Patch their first dose. They were so good about it. After about one week, Mushroom wasn’t biting his tail as much and Patch wasn’t scratching as much.
Their second dose is due on the 29th.
I will also treat the girls too, so their first dose will be on the 29th when I do the boys. Even though their first dose is not at the same time as the boy’s (I didn’t have them at that stage), it won’t matter too much because they are still in quarantine and not near the boys.
I will also start soaking all rat’s bedding in vinegar to make sure all mites and parasites are gone.
Second Dose
Two weeks later, I gave Mushroom and Patch their second dose and the girls their first dose. After a few days I could see a remarkable difference in the amount the boys were scratching, and Mushroom’s tail was healed not long later.
Ginger’s ears still have a weird ring around the tip, but I’m starting to think that it is part of her colouration.
All the rats are happy and not itchy or biting their tails any more. Two doses worked well on the boys.
