Selecta Multi-Purpose Heavy Duty 80cm Animal Enclosure
I also bought a play pen, so they can enjoy the outdoors, too. It is an expensive fence and quite awkward; but it is easy to assemble/disassemble each day. You will need to find a place to store it so it won’t rust. I keep mine in the shed.
The pen has 8 sections, one being a gate. It also comes with long pegs (like long tent pegs) to join the sections together. I recommend getting a 30cm jockey strap to make sure the gate is locked shut, bunnies are escape artists and can learn how to unlock latches.
After a couple of times outside, I realised that one fence set was not enough and I ended up purchasing two more (I have 3 sets total), so now I can set up a pen in different places in the garden each day. This is a great thing, because the more they get used to being in different places in the yard, the more comfortable they are. I also cut up the cardboard boxes to make a-frame tunnels for them to run in and out of.
Don’t get this fence system. I have had so much trouble with it. Read the review about it so you are well informed why I am of that opinion.
Hutches
Okay, let me explain something before I start discussing hutches.
Do not, never ever, get a wooden hutch. They are usually made from fir and/or pine wood, and both of those are highly toxic to rabbits. When they eat the wood, which they will, it can cause liver problems. When that happens, it’s too late.
Yes, it is true. Yet they still sell wooden hutches made of poisonous wood. Why?
If it is pine, make sure that it is kiln dried, not painted, varnished or lacquered.
Here’s an article about rabbits and wood
I have written articles about dangerous chemicals, poisioning and everything you want to know about wood – you’ll find them in the Health section.
When I found out that wood hutches can make bunnies really sick or even die, I set out to find other alternatives. I decided that I was going to make my own somehow. After a couple of days designing the perfect hutch out of paper, I realised pretty quick that even though I will make my own hutches sometime in the future, it will have to wait.
I wanted a hutch that:
- kept bunnies cool in summer, and warm in winter
- kept snakes, rats, mice and other creepies away
- was easy to clean
- had a modern aesthetic
- could be extended if the bunnies grow bigger than expected (or I get more bunnies)
I set out searching for hutches that ticked as many of the above points as possible. Not an easy task. No one makes responsible hutches.
After a few days I found Omlet, and I was in love…
After making a large and expensive purchase from them, I waited for it to be delivered.
