I had been carefully watching Buttons’ behaviour. He was slow, he didn’t want to do anything, he would just sit and think. He would sit in his outdoor pen and not move, all day. He barely ate, he stopped eating hay, he didn’t drink much water. He needed help.
It was about three days after Cotton passed that I started thinking about getting another bunny. He needed company. I was hesitant about it because it might be too soon, and I’ll look callus not mourning Cotton for a long time. But, Buttons needed a new friend, and a new lease on life.
I had read that it’s best to replace a bunny with the same sized bunny, but they were in limited supply. There weren’t any bunnies the same size as Buttons available, they seem to be hard to get. I scoured rescues, online sales sites, everywhere. Nothing. I had to make a decision soon.
While I was looking online, a new ad popped up. It was for Netherland Dwarf babies. They were cute. Really cute. But teensy. It had only had 3 views by the time I found it. Other bunny views were in the thousands. I contacted the man, and asked which babies were female, and I explained what had happened to Cotton. He sent me photos of the two girls. I fell in love.
Luckily, I had to go to stay with my sister to help my niece with studying for her Year 12 subject (she was in Year 11) and getting ready for the end of year exam, and they lived 20 minutes drive away from where the bunnies were.
My youngest niece and I collected both babies on Saturday 29th October, 2022. The man came to the front door with the tiniest cardboard box with two palm-sized bunnies in it.
They had no idea what was about to happen. I picked up the white one, and my niece picked up the harlequin one. We carefully put them into the carry box, I paid the man $60 per bunny and we headed to the car.
The man said that he was 70% sure that they were females, because it’s hard to tell. At that point in time, I didn’t really mind what sex they were, they were so small, soft and cute.
Once I got home, I asked him about their birthday, he said that they were born on 22nd September, 2022, which meant they were only 5 weeks old. That is too young to leave their mum, but some breeders prefer selling just weaned bubbas because they bond better with their adoptive bun-mum/dad.
I disagree with the fact that they sell them so young, but I didn’t want to return them.
