There have been a few times this month where Buttons just stops in his tracks and stares at a place in his indoor pen. His ears are pointed forward like he’s concentrating on something. One time a few weeks ago, he followed something invisible around his pen, and when I guess it turned towards him he had a fright and thumped. He then ran away and thumped a few more times.

Nova didn’t take any notice of Buttons, she stayed asleep. I put it down to her not being able to see very well.

I ended up picking Buttons up and giving him a cuddle because he was so scared of the invisible thing. When I put him back in his pen, the thing wasn’t gone, it had changed position and Buttons saw it behind the litter box and went up to it and thumped. He followed it around the pen, thumping, giving it the warning. After a while, it went out of the pen and down the hall, because Buttons’ behaviour clearly showed he watched it head down the hall. Once it had gone, he was fine. Back to normal.

On the 30th August, it happened again. I was busy watching a video on YouTube when I turned to look at the bunnies because they are suspiciously quiet. There they were, both staring at the water bowl, ears up, dead still, watching something invisible. I went over to them and they stayed like that. I asked the bunnies what they were looking at and to show me. Buttons stepped forward, stretched like an accordion, as close as he could to it, and booped it. He then immediately condensed backwards, and stared at it again, ears pointing to the exact same place as Nova’s. Nova then thumped. Both of their vision followed it as it moved to the back of their pen near the litter box, and then towards the door next to their pen. Nova thumped twice more. She stayed perfectly still, following every move it made. Buttons was a little braver this time, and went up to it, I guess about 20cm away from it, and watched it. He was scared stiff, but had some confidence.

They suddenly snapped out of it and wanted pats. It must have gone. They both needed comforting. I patted them and they started grooming each other.

It seems like we have a visitor that the only rabbits can see. I’d like to think it’s Maple, Lunar, or Cotton, because it’s about the right size for them, but I’m uncertain. All I know is that it doesn’t look like a bunny to Buttons and Nova, because their reactions would be totally different. But they know it’s just being a sticky-beak in their pen. They are only scared of it because it isn’t usually there and it arrives unexpectedly.

I simply cannot dismiss this any more, it happens too regularly now.

If it is Maple and/or Lunar, or Cotton, I’m glad you’re happy enough to come back to visit and it’s a shame I can’t see you, because it would be nice to see you again.

Again, on the evening of Thursday 31st August, Nova jumped up out of her lazy sleep and sat staring at something in the pen. Her head followed it as the invisible thing moved around in the pen and even came close to her, she reached forward to sniff it, and then it must of moved away because she followed it around the litter box. She then came over to me and sat near me watching it. I was watching her behaviour, she was definitely watching something but came to me for support. She wasn’t scared of it, because it must have been familiar, like it was the same thing as last night’s visitor. Buttons was asleep through it all, and she moved away from me once Buttons woke up. She went over to tell him about it, but the visitor had gone. She pushed herself between Buttons and the pen fence, and he started to lick her head.

In the beginning, both Buttons and Nova stare at nothing and thump. Now (in October 2023), they are used to it and go up to the invisible visitors and boop them. I have even seen Nova zoomy around the pen and stop and her head moves as if she is watching another rabbit run around in the pen.
