The property my partner had been living in for 12 years was evaluated and put up for sale. He was given 3 months to pack up and leave. That meant by the end of October he had to be in a new property. This began the house hunting story.
Every Saturday we went to inspections and open houses, applied for properties and for most of them we didn’t hear anything back. Some real estate agencies were really mean, others were rude, and one plainly refused to help because (and I quote) “We are in a rental crisis and we can’t help everyone.”
As you may be aware, home inspections last about 15 minutes. If you aren’t there on time, you miss out. Real Estates don’t time their inspections very well, and some overlap each other. So when you have a 10 minute drive to the next one, you have to race around a property with under 3 minutes to view it. That’s when I started to take photos of everything, giving me the chance to look back on the photos and remember the property.
We were looking for an older property, because they have larger backyards. We wanted a shed, grass and a house that was neat and easy to maintain. Some houses had small rooms, others had no carpet, water damaged floors, and even cracks in the plaster and the ceiling falling in. Those houses were for about $500 a week. That’s ridiculous. Shit boxes for an expensive price. We had to keep looking.
We did like some properties, but we never heard back from the agents once we applied. They can be rude.
Finally, we started to hear back from the agents, and our application was successful for a little old house with wooden floors, a pink bathroom sink, large-ish backyard, and a large shed. It ticked all the boxes.
Once we get the keys we will start moving in and the bunnies, rats, fish and dog will have a new home.
