After my grass in my grass garden died, I whippersniped it. I read online that if you cover grass with hay, like rye, the grass will grow through it and get nutrition from it as it grows.
I went around the neighbourhood and collected grass seed heads and dropped them on my grass garden. Afterwards, I spread a couple of used litter box hay on the grass and spread it around with a rake. I then hosed it. After a couple of days I spread a fair amount of rye hay on the grass and spread it around with a rake. Then hosed it again.
A couple of weeks later my grass was growing really well. I could trim off the tops, about the first 10-15cm and the bunnies had their first feed from the first harvest.
