“The ones with the blue ink in their ear are boys”, says the lady who sold me Hamish.
The 18th of December was the day I booked Hamish in to get a check up before being desexed. He climbed into the carry box and I popped him in the car.
I drove all the way to Point Cook to wait for about 15 minutes before a vet called “Hamish” into the consult room.
He took one look at the rabbit and said “I don’t deal with rabbits often”. That made me question my choices. But, I thought, it’s only a check up, so no harm can be done.
He checked her over and asked the usual questions: “age”, “breed”, “sex”, “food”, “lifestyle” etc.
I then pointed out a weird growth I had found on Hamish’s side. He took a look at it and immediately became concerned.
“I have never seen that on a rabbit before. I’ll take him in for a second opinion.” We wrapped Hamish in a burrito and he carried him through a door at the back of the consult room.
About 10 minutes later he returned.
“We had a check of the growth and we think that Hamish is actually a girl… It’s a nipple.”
I had many questions, but I didn’t ask them. Questions like: “Think she is a girl…” didn’t you check? Wouldn’t that answer the burning question… then I thought, “Well, I could have checked, too”, but I didn’t.
That just means I have to wait until she is 9 months old before I can get her desexed.
Hamish is a girl.
