We placed an ad online to sell the rat-girls. There wasn’t much interest for a few days. That kind of confirmed the fact that breeding rats might not be a good idea because they aren’t really a popular pet. I’m glad we aren’t going down that path because I wouldn’t know what to do with the babies we didn’t sell.

A lady answered the ad, she was interested in the girls for her daughters. She wanted friendly, litter trained, happy rats. That’s exactly what they were. The lady wanted to come to check the rats before she decided whether she wanted them or not. We agreed.

It turned out that she was a scammer and wasted our time again.

Luckily, another lady got in contact with us and said that she runs a sanctuary, and if we were willing to surrender the girls she would be more than happy to take them on.

We organised to drop them off to Heidelberg Heights on Sunday at 1pm.

We arrived at a little townhouse, and was greeted by the lady at the front gate. She lead us through her house to a small side room where I placed the cage on a stack of plastic boxes.

She said that she was an exotic pet vet nurse, and she is used to dealing with rats, rabbits and other exotics. Which was a relief to me, as I didn’t want them to go to someone who didn’t know what they were doing.

We left and I turned around to say good bye to the girls one last time.

“Don’t leave us, Mummy. Where are you going?”

Their little faces said it all. They didn’t want to be left being with two dogs, a cat and a cooing pigeon.

Sorry babies, you’re better off with someone who will love you more than I could.
